Designed to fail?

We have two of these; first one is no longer able to have its settings change. One simply shows 0.00 (but obviously at about a 11.0) while the other is permanently set on 26.0. Both purchased at roughly the same time and both now becoming unusable at the same time.

New Leaf should offer more choices than two of the same brand. This is the third of these expensive batteries that have failed before they should. They appear to be designed to fail forcing you to come in a re-purchase the only choice in the store.
